My Solution

Previously, I have identified an opportunity for working parents of children in sporting activities. These parents are often short on time and run late getting their child to practices or their children may end up missing practice completely.

My solution to this is creating and providing a car service for these children to get to practice on time.

Looking for Opportunity in Economic Trends and Regulatory Changes

Economic Trends:

1. According to Florida Trend, the recovery from the recession is creating jobs for Floridians.  The economy is becoming more stable thus creating confidence in business growth. The projection for the largest growing job market in 2016 is in construction, creating many positions for those who were previously out of work due to the recession. There are many opportunities associated with this trend. With the economy leveling out and even growing, more businesses may want to expand. There will be opportunities for business growth, in the organizations that are hiring these construction companies and the construction companies themselves. With more projects comes a greater demand for employees. With more employees comes a greater demand for housing opportunities. The rising economy creates a trickle effect. The customers for these opportunities are the business owners and the employees of that business. The opportunities are easy to exploit. As in any situation where there is growth, bringing more people into an area, there needs to be more housing, more food options, possibly more child care options.

Having friends that are in the construction business, from friends that own a lumber supply store to friends that work for painting contractors, it has been my observation that this growing field creates many opportunities. It brings more people into a centralized area, creating more needs. Some people may travel for these jobs. Depending on how long the project is going to take, they may need temporary housing and they certainly have to eat at some point.

2. A look at a more local trend is the housing market in Gainesville. According to The Florida & Metro Forecast the housing market in Gainesville is rising, becoming a seller's market.  This can be contributed to a low unemployment rate in Alachua County, one of the lowest in the state of Florida. There is also a decreasing number in foreclosures, making property values rise. There are some opportunities that can come from this trend, making it an easy exploitation. Many home owners can sell their homes at a higher price than in the past. This can mean that they have more income to purchase a more expensive home and the trend would continue upward. Also, many contractors and builders can profit from this. New housing developments can emerge creating more job opportunities. Land owners can sell their land at an inflated price for these housing developments.

As stated above, I have observed some of these opportunities from friends in the construction business. I also have friends that are currently trying to take advantage of this situation. They are trying to find a house in Alachua County to purchase before the housing prices become too high for them to afford the size house that they need. They are also trying to make improvements to their current home as to maximize their selling price.

Regulatory Changes:

1. A new law passed in Florida is that all police must have procedures in place for body cams. Many articles can be found about this, but for the purposes of this assignment, I am going to use the article from Greene Publishing, Inc.: http://www.greenepublishing.com/new-florida-law-requires-police-department-body-cams/
This new law does not require that agencies use body cams, just that they have procedures in place for the training and retention of such devices and recordings to keep in compliance with Florida's public record law.

I believe that there is a small opportunity with this new law. It has the potential to create more jobs with the larger agencies. I don't believe that this is an easily exploitable opportunity, but it is not difficult either. The opportunity is going to lie with the larger agencies such as Miami-Dade PD. Here, in Gainesville, I know that there is not enough funding for such devices and/or jobs. Even though I am not a law enforcement officer, nor do I work for the Gainesville Police Department, I do work with an agency that works in close relations with GPD.

2. Veterans Court is a law that has been passed for those who have served in our military that may have issues related to their time of service, including PTSD. Not many people are aware that there is such a program. You can read about it here: http://health.wusf.usf.edu/post/new-florida-law-allows-more-vets-receive-treatment#stream/0

Many of our military heros have come home wounded, mentally and emotionally. This can lead to drug problems, alcohol problems and minor deviant behavior. This is an opportunity for them to get the help that they need and stay out of jail. This is not an opportunity for the masses, but it is a huge, life changing opportunity to these men and women who struggle with these issues. To me, that is the most important opportunity, a chance to get these men and women back on their feet, but it also is an opportunity for those counselors and therapists to reach these men and women and help them. Here, in the Eighth Judicial Circuit, we have had Veterans Court for a while, but with this beginning to be seen more around the state, opportunities could arise for more treatment facilities and therapy centers, thus creating more jobs.

Testing the Opportunity Hypothesis - Part I

I have an opportunity! We need a shuttle service for kids, especially for sports practices. Specifically ages 6-16.

Parents of children that are active in sports face difficulties with time management. Due to work schedules, last minute meetings, having multiple children in sports or other responsibilities, parents often struggle with getting their children to practice on time, if at all.

Who has this issue:   Parents, Coaches, the athletes
Why do they have this issue:  The parents have issues with work schedules, last minute meetings, overbooking, last minute responsibilities and multiple children, among other possible reasons. The coaches have an issue with members of their teams not attending practices. The children have issues simply by not being able to go.
What is the issue: Getting their children to practice on time, if at all.

Testing the boundaries
For this assignment, I sought out parents to interview with various numbers of children, ranging from only one child to five children. The children were or various ages, some within the boundary of my opportunity, some outside.

When interviewing parents for this assignment, I did find that every person or family that I interviewed had this need.

When asking them about what the need was, it was simple: their children needed to get to their sports practice. It is a challenge for families to create that extra time, but they do not want their children to miss out on sports activities.

When asking them about why the need was there, it was clear with some statements of "time" and "I feel like I need another parent." Working parents simply do not have the time to take their children to everything that they are involved in.  One interviewee was interested in the idea just because she had multiple small children. She found it hard to have the oldest at practice, chasing the younger one around or keeping him still while being pregnant with her third baby. Now that baby #3 has arrived, she feels that it would be impossible to have her oldest in sports without a service like this. She thought this was a great idea to free up some time for her. Another interviewee is going back to work full time and her daughter needs to get to cheerleading practice. This will be difficult for her as her daughter's practice in mid-afternoon when she is at work.

I got some great feedback and some great ideas from the interview process. Some new ideas came up in early interviews that I was able to expand on in later interviews.  Some of these interviews went a little long, we expanded on some ideas and kicked around some others. This may have not been the full intent of the assignment, but it helped me to understand where different people are coming from.

I took it one step further and interviewed some kids as well. These were not recorded, but it was insightful to hear their response to some of these questions. I interviewed three (3) older children, ages 11, 12 and 16. Surprisingly, they felt comfortable with a service like this as long as they were able to meet the driver ahead of time.

Identifying Local Opportunities

The five local opportunities that I found in The Orlando Sentinel are listed below:

1. TSA needs to shorten security wait
    Article can be found at:
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF0EFD8A906FF0?p=AWNB
According to this article, the wait times for a TSA check, prior to boarding a plane, are getting out of control. International Airports are short staffed in this area which is making passengers angry as the majority of them are missing their flights. The airports are bringing therapy animals, passing out lollipops and hiring clowns to keep the outrage to a minimum. The TSA is understaffed, undertrained and loaning their resources to other functions instead of utilizing all staff for the purpose of airport screening.

The problem ultimately lies with TSA funding.  It seems that there is not enough money allocated to the TSA for proper staff and proper training. There is also a problem with rising baggage check fees. Travelers are using oversized carry-on bags so as to not pay the baggage fees. This causes prolonged review of the traveler's possessions.

The people who have this problem are the International airports and travelers.

2. West-side apartments are back in bankruptcy
    Article can be found at:
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF0EFE98F5C928?p=AWNB
This article talks about the decline of some apartment housing on the West side of Orlando. The current owner has let the complexes fall into such ruin that the city is having to expend more emergency resources due to the hazards that they are causing. The company that owns these complexes have filed for bankruptcy. The Lift Orlando project has moved to that side of town and hopes to acquire the buildings/land for a rejuvenation project.

The problem is the decline of living standards on that side of town leading to loss of businesses and poor quality housing.

The main company that has a problem is the First One Hundred company, the owners of the buildings, who have filed for bankruptcy. Also, the citizens of Orlando, whether it be emergency services expending their resources or citizens of that community being exposed to those conditions.

3. Orange schools strengthen security access to buildings
Article can be found at :
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF1D2E2C9F2C08?p=AWNB
This article states that schools in Orange County have had sub-par security procedures in place until recently. Prior staff and unauthorized vendors have had unnoticed access to these schools. There has been poor record keeping of access/key cards of prior staff members, visitors and vendors. Steps have been taken to remedy this. New equipment and new procedures are being put in place.

The problem is with the school staff not keeping accurate records of personnel, visitors and vendors that have access to the school.

The people who have this problem is the individual schools and the school board for not properly governing the individual schools. Which in turn may cause problems for students and parents.

4. Residents leery about new plans for San Pedro
Article can be found at :
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF0EFE46F36370?p=AWNB
This article talks about land usage problems in the San Pedro Center area. Many people chose to live there for its rural setting and lifestyle. A developer has recently purchased several hundred acres from the Catholic diocese and plans to build several dwellings on this land.

The problem with this is that the current residents of the ares will lose valuable land. They may not lose their land, personally, but their point of choosing that location to live was for the surrounding land and the lifestyle that it offers. They will no longer be able to view the pristine grazing land or old trees that they love. They will be forced to live amongst crowded housing developments and communities with retail space and crowding.

The people that have the problem, in this situation, is the current residents of this area.

5. School - discipline - kept from - public view - Policy hides sex, drug infractions and more
    Article can be found at:
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CE811AA0DCC7E0?p=AWNB
This article talks about the lack of public knowledge when teachers or school staff have been disciplined through the school district. It goes on to report of specific incidents the educators have been accused and/or arrested for, including sexual misconduct on and off campus, reporting to work under the influence of alcohol or drugs and battery on and off campus.

The problem is that staff is not thoroughly screened on a regular basis. Also, that disciplinary actions are not made public in some school districts.

The school district has the problem. They control who comes in and out of our schools. As stated above in a similar article, this leads to problems with parents and students, in the long run.

Readily available technology.
Looking at your phone is easier than paying attention to or teaching your child.

Wow, I have a lot of issues with people! I don't know that I did this assignment correctly, but if anything, I have definitely learned where my sore spots are. Like the video said, the first few that I wrote down were easy, but when I really thought about the things that bugged me, they were more internal, more emotional than just my phone not working or being irritated that I had to take something back to the store this weekend. I found that I am guilty of 99% of the things that bug. I irritate myself. It was difficult to get to the root of the "why" on some things. I don't feel that "just because" would have been an appropriate answer, but that is what I'm finding. Or maybe it is just because I'm not really sure why, I don't know the answer, or I can't find the words for it. I do know that I will get better at this though.

My Entrepreneurship Story

I am not much of a writer, but here goes...

I guess for a small part of my life, I was an Entrepreneur. I started my own business. I bought everything that I needed for this business from my personal finances, I registered my LLC and got a tax ID number. I had a legitimate business that I paid taxes on and that could be googled. That makes it real, right!?!

Having your own business is no small undertaking. It was time consuming, hard word. I am sure that it would have been well worth the time and effort had I been able to stick with it. For a small business to grow and succeed, the requirements are greater than what I had at that particular time in my life. My business was successful, but life threw some curve balls at me and I closed shop a few years after getting started.

I am fortunate to have several Entrepreneurs in my life. I have friends that are in business for themselves, making significant impacts on our community, in their chosen field. There is one person in my life, whom I would truly call an Entrepreneur, making huge strides in the world of Chiropractics. I am honored to have occasionally worked along side him and his amazing team over the past few years watching his "baby" grow to be a wildly successful organization. Diligence is the key.

In all honesty and candor, the main reason that I enrolled in this class is because it fit my schedule. My initial thought was that I would probably never use it and it was something that I could get credits for. Now that I am looking through the assignments and realizing what I am going to have to do, I feel that I may really enjoy this and learn a lot. I never thought of myself as an entrepreneur or that my tiny business would ever amount to anything, but great things can come from tiny ideas. Who knows, I may be in business for myself again and do great things. Hopefully this class will change my mindset, open it up and broaden my horizons. I look forward to seeing what's ahead.

Below is a picture of my "google-able" business.
